An Evergreen British Classic
Coming From The Latin Taxon Bow And Bacca Berry, Taxus Baccata Is A Horticultural And Historical Phenomenon, And A Favourite Here At Primrose, Being Tolerant Of Pruning, Slow Growing And Highly Adaptable. Also Known As English Yew, The Tree Is A Haven For Birds Thanks To Evergreen Branches And Red Winter Berries, But Most Notable For Its Pinnate Needle-Like Leaves With A Raised Central Vein.
Yews Can Commonly Be Found Growing In Churchyards, But Actually Predate Most Churches, Being One Of The Longest Lived Trees. It Is Probable That Churches Are Located At Formerly Pagan Shrines Worshipped By The Ancient Britons. The Tree’S Wood’S Mechanical Properties Make It Perfect For Bow Making, And Would Have Been Used By English And Welsh Longbowmen, So Much So That Supplies Of Timber Were Nearly Completely Exhausted By The End Of The Medieval Period.
